SynergyTD - Launch and Origins.


Origins

Synergy Tower Defense, the game, is built with unconventional TD elements, and expanding upon those ideas. In a glamorous phrasing, this game was made to be the antithesis of conventional TDs. The entire project started with this question: "In playing (tower defense) games, what's stopping me from doing the same thing over and over again?". Oftentimes, there is little incentive or pushing force to go for different strategies other than for the sake of discovery.  This alone created the concept of a shop that offers randomly selected towers, where the optimal play is different for each playthrough.

(In TD games, all or most towers are available at the shop, locked behind a gold requirement. In here, it is random. The shop can be "refreshed" to offer new towers.)


Unconventionality as the Identity

1) Upgrades. Towers often utilize upgrade paths to become stronger, but it oftentimes can be very basic, such as a damage increase. Basic ideas are not bad, they are needed! But how can unique interactions and upgrades be explored by this limiting system? The answer is to abandon it. One thing led to another, and towers being the upgrades was what stuck.

2) Enemies. Enemies often just walk on the path and exist. Can't they do more than just existing? Why not make them fight back?
Solution: Make them do more. Make them fight back.

The types of enemies are also usually limited. As of this time of writing, there are three "factions" of enemies, each faction having their own identity.


3) Team effort. Usually, the more efficient option that wins until the end of the game is to put all eggs in one basket. This premise is not incorrect, but it makes the other towers look weak and useless. This also encourages good positioning of the many towers rather than just one or two.

Future

This project was made just for fun of doing it. 

As such, the arts/animation has not been truly polished in any way. hahahaha. Also, the lack of music and sound effects is saddening, but hopefully with enough traction this can change.

As for the gameplay: Lots more can and will be added. More factions/types of enemies. More towers. More maps. More randomness.
